Confidence Has Been Quieter Than I Expected

Welcome in. We're so glad you're here.

If you've been doubting yourself a little more than usual lately, you're certainly not alone. We hope these next few minutes feel like sitting down with a good friend who gently reminds you of something you've known all along.

There's always a place for you here.

For the longest time, I believed confidence looked like certainty. I imagined confident people always knew exactly what to say, never second-guessed themselves, and walked into every new opportunity with a smile that suggested they had everything under control. It seemed like such a wonderful way to live, although I couldn't help noticing that I rarely felt that way myself.

Most of the time, I was simply hoping no one noticed I was figuring things out as I went. Then one afternoon, while helping a friend prepare for a presentation, she quietly admitted she was terrified. I almost laughed because she'd been giving presentations for years, and from where I was sitting, she looked completely comfortable. She smiled when she saw the surprise on my face and said, "I've learned something. Confidence usually arrives after I begin, not before."

I've thought about those words many times since then. Perhaps we've been expecting confidence to arrive too early. Maybe confidence isn't what gives us the courage to take the first step. Maybe it quietly grows

because we were brave enough to take the first step anyway.

Looking back, some of my happiest memories began with a little uncertainty. New jobs, new friendships, family adventures, and even simple conversations often started with that familiar feeling of wondering whether everything would work out. If I had waited until I felt completely confident, I might have missed many of the experiences that eventually became some of my favorite stories.

Life has a gentle way of teaching us as we go. I was reminded of that while planting flowers in the garden last spring. I stood in front of the

display for far longer than anyone should spend choosing flowers, convinced that if I picked the wrong ones, I'd somehow ruin the entire garden. An employee finally smiled and said, "Flowers are much more forgiving than people think." She was right. A few months later, the garden was full of color, and I couldn't remember which flowers had made me hesitate in the first place.

Sometimes we make life much heavier than it needs to be. We worry about saying exactly the right thing, making exactly the right decision, or taking exactly the right path. Meanwhile, life quietly keeps reminding us that most of the people we admire didn't become confident because everything always went according to plan. They became confident because they discovered they could handle life even when it didn't.

That realization feels wonderfully freeing. It means confidence isn't reserved for fearless people. It's available to ordinary people who keep

showing up, learning, growing, laughing at their mistakes, and discovering that tomorrow usually brings another opportunity to try again.

I've also noticed that the people who seem most confident are often the quickest to admit when they don't know something. They ask questions without embarrassment, laugh at themselves when things go sideways, and rarely feel the need to prove they're perfect. There's something refreshing about that kind of confidence because it isn't built on pretending. It's built on being comfortable enough to be wonderfully human.

Perhaps that's the confidence worth pursuing. Not the kind that has every answer. The kind that trusts you'll find your way. The next time you catch yourself wondering whether you're capable enough, experienced enough, or ready enough, I hope you'll remember that confidence has never required perfection. It has simply asked you to believe that you can take the next step, even if your knees shake a

little while you're taking it.

Most of us are doing better than we think we are. Sometimes we simply need someone to remind us.

"Confidence doesn't grow because we never feel uncertain. It grows each time

we discover we were stronger than we realized."
