Welcome in.
We're so glad you're here.
We hope today has given you at least one reason to smile, even if it was something wonderfully small. If it hasn't, perhaps these next few minutes will gently remind you that joy has a funny way of showing up when we least expect it.
There's always a place for you here.
The other afternoon I was hurrying through the grocery store with a shopping list in one hand and my car keys in the other, determined to get home before the frozen food became a science experiment in the back seat. My mind was already planning dinner, tomorrow's appointments, and whether I remembered to move the laundry into the dryer before leaving the house.
I was making excellent progress until I heard a little boy laughing somewhere near the produce section. Not giggling. Not chuckling.
Laughing with the kind of wholehearted joy that makes everyone nearby smile without even realizing they're doing it.
I looked over just in time to see him balancing an apple on top of his head while his grandfather pretended to be absolutely amazed by this remarkable accomplishment. The apple rolled onto the floor, the little boy laughed even harder, and his grandfather laughed right along with him. It lasted maybe fifteen seconds. Then everyone went back to shopping.
As I walked away, I caught myself smiling. Nothing extraordinary had happened. No life-changing lesson had been shared. It was simply one of those beautifully ordinary moments that quietly reminds you life is still full of reasons to smile.
I wonder how many moments like that happen every single day while we're busy thinking about everything else. Joy has never seemed particularly interested in making a grand entrance. More often, it slips
quietly into ordinary afternoons and waits patiently to see whether anyone notices. It arrives in a handwritten note tucked inside a birthday card, the smell of fresh bread drifting through the kitchen, a favorite song that unexpectedly begins playing on the radio, or the sound of someone you love laughing in the next room. None of those moments last very long. Perhaps that's part of what makes them so precious.
For a long time, I believed joy would become more abundant after life became easier. I imagined there would eventually be a season with fewer responsibilities, fewer worries, and more free time to appreciate everything around me. Life, however, had other plans.
It gently taught me that joy doesn't wait for perfect circumstances. It happily shows up in wonderfully imperfect lives, often while we're folding laundry, watering flowers, walking the dog, or sharing a bowl of ice cream on the back porch after dinner.
I've also noticed that joy has a delightful sense of humor. Just last week I watched a golden retriever become completely convinced that a butterfly wanted to play fetch. The butterfly had very different plans, but the dog remained delightfully optimistic. I laughed all the way down the sidewalk, mostly because the dog looked so proud of himself for trying.
Moments like that have become little reminders for me. The world is still full of beauty. People are still kind. Children are still curious.
Dogs are still wonderfully convinced they understand butterflies.
There is something deeply comforting about that.
The older I become, the more I realize that joy isn't something we achieve. It isn't another goal to accomplish or another item to squeeze onto an already crowded calendar. Joy is something we notice. It quietly appears in the middle of ordinary life and asks only one thing from us.
Slow down long enough to see me. Perhaps that's why some of my happiest memories aren't the biggest moments of my life. They're
simple conversations around the dinner table, evening walks with someone I love, fresh flowers on the kitchen counter, and unexpected laughter that arrived for no particular reason at all. Those moments may seem small while we're living them. Looking back, they rarely feel small at all.
"Joy rarely asks for perfect circumstances. It simply asks us to notice the beautiful moments that have been quietly waiting for us all along."
