It's Amazing What Ten Minutes Can Do

If today has been moving a little faster than you'd like, perhaps this is your invitation to slow down for a few minutes. Nothing is waiting from you while you're here except your attention, and sometimes that's the greatest gift we can give ourselves.

For the longest time, I underestimated ten minutes. After all, what could anyone possibly accomplish in ten minutes? By the time I answered a few emails, switched the laundry, and wandered into the kitchen only to forget why I went there in the first place, those ten minutes had usually disappeared without leaving much behind except

another unfinished thought.

Then one quiet Saturday morning changed my mind. I carried a cup of coffee onto the back porch with every intention of sitting there for just a minute." The neighborhood was still waking up, the air felt cool against my face, and somewhere nearby a bird seemed determined to sing every song it knew before breakfast.

I wasn't trying to solve a problem or figure out my life. I was simply sitting. Ten minutes later, I walked back into the house feeling strangely refreshed. The dishes were still waiting in the sink, the grocery list hadn't written itself, and the laundry hadn't magically folded itself while I was outside. Nothing around me had changed, and yet everything felt just a little lighter because I had. That little moment stayed with me.

It reminded me how easy it is to spend an entire day taking care of responsibilities without spending even a few quiet minutes taking care of ourselves. Somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that every spare moment should be productive, even though some of life's most meaningful moments accomplish nothing except helping us breathe a little easier.

I've come to believe those moments are anything but wasted.

A friend recently told me she had started arriving at work ten minutes early every morning, not because she wanted to answer more emails, but because she enjoyed sitting in the parking lot with a warm cup of coffee before the day began. She laughed as she admitted it had become her favorite part of the morning.

"I think everyone likes me better after those ten minutes," she said.

I knew exactly what she meant. Sometimes a little quiet changes far more than we expect. I've discovered that ten peaceful minutes can appear almost anywhere. They might be found while sitting on the porch after dinner, taking a slow walk around the neighborhood, reading a few pages of a favorite book, or simply watching the rain drift across the windows while the rest of the house grows wonderfully still.

None of those moments would ever look impressive on a calendar.

Even so, they often become the moments that quietly restore us.

The older I become, the more convinced I am that life wasn't designed to be lived at full speed every waking hour. Music needs moments of silence to become beautiful, conversations need pauses to become meaningful, and hearts need little spaces to rest if they're going to keep giving so much to the people they love.

Perhaps that's why ten minutes can feel surprisingly powerful. Not because they change our circumstances. Because they gently change us.

When we return to the rest of the day, we often bring a little more patience, a little more perspective, and a little more kindness with us. The responsibilities haven't disappeared, but they somehow feel easier to carry because we've remembered that we matter too.

Maybe ten minutes isn't such a small thing after all. Maybe it's one of the simplest ways to begin again.

"You don't always need a weekend away to find peace. Sometimes ten quiet minutes are enough to help your heart remember its way home."
