Hello,
Let’s be honest—setting new goals can sometimes feel like standing at the bottom of a mountain, staring up, and thinking, “I forgot my hiking boots.” You don’t climb a mountain in one leap. You take one small, steady step at a time and the same is true for your goals.
1. They’re doable.
Big, sweeping changes are exciting in theory but overwhelming in reality. Telling yourself, “I’m going to meditate an hour every day,” might last a few days, but adding one mindful breath before you check your phone? That’s something you can do today, and tomorrow, and the day after that.
2. They build momentum.
Think of small steps like dominoes. Knock one over, and suddenly there’s energy in motion. One glass of water becomes two. One 10-minute walk becomes three a week. Small wins don’t just feel good; they trick your brain into craving more progress.
3. They stick.
The habits that transform us aren’t usually dramatic. They’re the quiet ones repeated over time. Just as brushing your teeth daily adds up to healthy gums, one small, intentional step repeated consistently becomes part of who you are.
A friend of mine once told me she wanted to run a marathon. The problem was she couldn’t jog more than five minutes without stopping. Instead of quitting, she decided to run to the next lamppost. That was her step. Then the next lamppost, and the next.
A year later, she ran across the finish line of her first marathon. Not because she leaped into 26 miles, but because she honored those tiny lamppost-sized steps.
Your goals don’t have to be marathons, but the principle still holds true: progress is less about giant leaps and more about small commitments honored daily.
Try This Today
Instead of writing down a giant, overwhelming goal like “I will finally get in shape,” ask yourself: What’s one thing I can do today that nudges me closer?
Some ideas:
Take a 10-minute walk after dinner.
Drink one extra glass of water.
Choose one healthy swap at your next meal.
Write down one thing you’re grateful for before bed.
Turn your phone off for the first 5 minutes of the morning.
These small choices may not feel earth-shattering in the moment, but stacked together, day after day, they create an entirely different life.
Progress is progress, no matter the size. If you take one small action today, you’ve already moved closer to your goal than if you waited for the “perfect moment.” (Spoiler: that perfect moment doesn’t exist.)
What if tomorrow you stumble? That’s okay! The gift of small steps is that you can always take another one.
When we look back years from now, the milestones won’t just be the big wins; they’ll be the small moments that built them. The mornings you chose to walk instead of scroll. The glass of water instead of soda. The “yes” to rest instead of burnout.
Every small step is an act of self-trust. That’s the real goal beneath every resolution, every plan, every dream.
You’ve got this, and we’re walking right alongside you.
