When Everything Feels Like Too Much

Welcome

We're so glad you're here. If today has felt a little fuller than you planned, you're in good company. Pull up a chair, take a slow sip of whatever you're drinking, and stay with us for a few minutes. Sometimes a small pause is exactly what a busy heart has been looking for.

There's always a place for you here.

I knew it was going to be one of those days the moment I opened the refrigerator and completely forgot why I was standing there. I looked at the shelves for a few thoughtful seconds, hoping inspiration might strike. Instead, I closed the door, walked away, and remembered exactly what I needed just as I reached the living room. Naturally, when I walked back to the kitchen, I forgot again.

If someone had been watching, they probably would have wondered what in the world I was doing. The truth is, I was doing what many of us do when life has quietly become just a little too full. We keep going.

Most of the time, feeling overwhelmed doesn't arrive with a dramatic announcement. It doesn't knock on the front door and introduce itself. It sneaks in one little responsibility at a time. We agree to help with one more project, add one more appointment to the calendar, squeeze in one more errand on the way home, and tell ourselves we'll slow down next week.

Then next week arrives looking remarkably similar to this one. Before long, we find ourselves standing in the kitchen, wondering why we opened the refrigerator, while mentally planning dinner, remembering a birthday card we forgot to mail, and trying to decide whether the laundry can survive one more hour in the dryer without becoming hopelessly wrinkled.

Life has a funny sense of timing. Just when we think we're finally catching up, it hands us something else to remember. I've noticed that women are especially good at carrying invisible things. We remember who likes cream in their coffee, who has a dentist appointment next Tuesday, which friend has been having a difficult week, and whether there's enough milk for breakfast tomorrow morning.

Those aren't heavy things by themselves, but when you carry hundreds of little thoughts every day, they begin to weigh more than you realize. Perhaps that's why feeling overwhelmed can be so confusing. You look around and think, Nothing terrible has happened, and you're right. Nothing terrible has happened. Life has simply been asking a lot from you lately.

One afternoon, I watched a woman at the grocery store smile as she searched every pocket of her purse for the shopping list she had carefully written before leaving home. After a minute or two she laughed, reached into the shopping cart, and picked the list up from where she'd absentmindedly placed it.

We smiled at each other. Neither of us needed to explain. Some days are just like that. There's something comforting about realizing we're all a little more alike than we sometimes think. We all misplace our keys. We all forget why we walked into a room now and then. We all have evenings when cereal sounds like a perfectly reasonable dinner.

Maybe being overwhelmed isn't a sign that you're falling behind. Maybe it's simply a gentle reminder that you've been taking care of so much for so long that you've forgotten to leave a little room for yourself. I don't believe the answer is to become someone who has everything perfectly organized. I've never actually met that person, and if she exists, I suspect she'd occasionally lose her shopping list too.

Perhaps the answer is much gentler than that. Perhaps it's allowing yourself to smile on the days when life feels wonderfully imperfect, trusting that not every unfinished task is an emergency, and remembering that your value has never been measured by how many things you managed to accomplish before bedtime.

Tomorrow will bring another list. There will probably be another load of laundry, another phone call, another trip to the grocery store, and quite possibly another moment when you're standing in front of the refrigerator wondering what brought you there.

When that happens, I hope you'll smile, not because everything is under control, but because you're wonderfully, beautifully human.

"You were never meant to carry every moment perfectly. Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is set the weight down for a little while."
