When You Can't Quite See the Next Step

We're so glad you're here.

If life has felt a little uncertain lately, you've found a good place to pause for a few minutes. You don't have to have everything figured out before you sit down, and you certainly don't have to solve tomorrow before you finish today.

There's always a place for you here.

I have never been particularly fond of driving through thick fog.

There's something about watching a familiar road disappear into a soft blanket of gray that makes me instinctively slow down. I can't see very far ahead, and although I know the road is still there, I find myself wishing I could see just a little farther than the headlights allow.

Then, almost without realizing it, I remember something interesting.

I've never actually needed to see the entire road to reach my destination. I've only needed to see the next few feet.

Life has a funny way of working much the same way. There are seasons when everything feels wonderfully clear. Decisions come easily, opportunities seem obvious, and we move forward with confidence because we know exactly where we're headed. Then there are other seasons when even the smallest decision seems to require far more thought than it should. We wonder whether we're making the right choice, taking the right path, or heading in the right direction, and before long we begin believing that everyone else must

have life figured out except us.

I used to think clarity arrived all at once. I imagined it would feel like someone turning on a light in a dark room, suddenly revealing every

answer I'd been searching for. Instead, I've discovered that clarity usually arrives much more quietly than that. It often begins with one small realization, one gentle conversation, or one ordinary afternoon when everything doesn't suddenly make sense, but one small piece finally does.

I remember spending nearly half an hour looking for my car keys one Saturday morning. I checked the kitchen counter, the bedroom dresser, my purse, and even the refrigerator, which says far more about my state of mind than it does about my organizational skills. After retracing my steps several times, I finally discovered the keys exactly where I'd left them—hanging on the little hook beside the back door.

Apparently I had walked past them three different times. It made me laugh because life occasionally does the very same thing. We become so busy searching everywhere else for answers that we overlook the quiet wisdom that's been waiting patiently beside us all along.

Perhaps clarity isn't always about discovering something new. Perhaps it's about finally noticing what has been there all along. I've found that some of the clearest moments in my life haven't arrived while I was trying my hardest to force an answer. They've appeared while taking a walk, pulling weeds in the garden, washing dishes, or sitting on the porch with a warm cup of coffee after the house had finally grown quiet. There seems to be something about slowing our pace that gives our hearts room to catch up with our thoughts.

Maybe that's because clarity doesn't enjoy being chased. Maybe it prefers to meet us while we're simply living. The older I become, the more comfortable I am admitting that I don't always know exactly what comes next. There was a time when that uncertainty would have made me uncomfortable because I believed confidence meant having every answer. Now I think confidence often looks much simpler. It means trusting that the next step will become clear when it's time to take it, even if today all I can see is the path directly in front of me.

That realization has taken a surprising amount of pressure off my shoulders. After all, life has never asked me to have the next five years completely mapped out before breakfast. It has simply invited me to pay attention, make the best decision I can with what I know today, and trust that tomorrow will bring enough light for tomorrow's path.

Oddly enough, that's usually exactly what happens. The fog lifts. The next turn becomes visible. The road continues, and we wonder why we spent so much time worrying that we'd never find our way.

"Clarity rarely arrives all at once. More often, it quietly appears when we stop searching so far ahead and begin noticing the next step already waiting before us."
